Blue collar discipline means getting up early, every morning, whether you like it or not.
But white collar discipline, the kind of discipline that will actually benefit Type A individuals making over $250K, is often the opposite.
Do you really think getting up at 4:30am is good for you? Maybe it is if you’re a lazy piece of shit who has never accomplished anything in your life.
But discipline for my elite clients isn’t defined as going the extra mile. It’s defined as doing the smartest thing, even when it makes you uncomfortable. Even when it means stopping with an extra mile to go.
If sleeping in makes you uncomfortable, you’d probably benefit more from sleeping in than getting that 6th workout of the week.
If skipping a set on your programmed workout makes you uncomfortable, you might benefit from skipping two.
And of course the opposite is also true. If it’s been easier for you to skip the gym to “focus on work,” well then you will need to figure out how to stop doing that
Discipline isn’t a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. Sometimes it requires doing more. Sometimes less. But it’s always the smartest action you know you can take, even when it makes you uncomfortable.
