What's the difference between a liberal and a Marxist? In my view it's their view on taxation.
Everyone on the left thinks the rich don't pay enough in taxes. When you alert them to the fact that federal tax revenue has been roughly consistent as a percentage of GDP over the last 50 years, and that the top 1% have paid an increasingly larger share of federal tax revenue, they may claim that our nation is so rich that the wealthy have a duty to support the less fortunate.
But when you alert them that Hong Kong has no capital gains tax and their tax revenue as a % of GDP is 40% less than the US, and that they have the longest life expectancy in the world, that's where the leftist reveals his true colors.
When you alert the Democrat to the reality that the government has plenty of money to solve the problems it will not solve, his response tells you what kind of Democrat he really is. Because a true liberal wants our society to be better off and sees taxing the rich as the best path to achieving that. While a communist thinks taxing the rich is the benefit in and of itself.
